Men in Yellow Hats make Terrible Babysitters

I read three stories to my little Princess each night at bedtime, and she always enjoys the task of choosing which three make the cut for any given evening. I've noticed that she tends to favor certain books in cycles, sometimes she is in a Goodnight Moon mood and other times she wants to read the "Little Critter" series, or see what the Berenstain Bears are up to. Last night, she decided on some Curious George books, of which I am certain we possess the entire series.

It seems our little friend is at it again. Last night, we read of the exploits of George in the Ice Cream Shop run by Mr. Herb, who apparently doesn't refer to the OSHA handbook as far as the rules of having a monkey running around in an eating establishment.

Well, anyway. So George is left alone AGAIN by his friend, the Man with the Yellow Hat, as he is told to "Be a good little monkey. Goodbye."
After all this time, doesn't this man realize that this monkey is gonna get in trouble because that's what he always does! This man with the yellow hat who has no other name is either very trusting or very stupid. I mean, sometimes I think that someone should call the MPS (monkey protective services) to investigate and, at the very least, put this man in some monkey parenting classes. In this day and age, you can't just leave your monkey anywhere and expect that he won't get into trouble.

In any case, each time I read another Curious George book I always wonder when my little Princess is going to point this out, because she is very astute about these things. She is five and just started kindergarten where they are all about following rules. I know she notices that the Man always leaves George alone, at which point George gets into trouble.

Ok, I digress. That is the whole fun of the story because it is so predictable. And I do love George, mainly because my kids are the exact same way. But unlike the Yellow Hat Guy, I don't make a habit of testing their obedience by putting them in impossible situations.

But that Mr. Herb? He really shouldn't let monkeys in his ice cream shop.

Just sayin'.

ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzz

Houston, we have a problem. I recently discovered that I might have made a brain association between reading and sleeping . You see, every night after the monkeys are in bed, I crawl in my comfy bed with all the pillows, get everything just so (that means kicking the dog out of my spot, fluffing up the pillows and pulling the covers from hubby), and I settle in with a book, any book off my conveniently located "library" stacked up on my nightstand. By this time of the day, I am usually pretty tired but I love to read so I get my trusty booklight out and start to read. After a few paragraphs, I start to fall asleep. Usually I wake up about an hour later, still in the reading position, with the book open and the light still on. Ok, well I guess it's wishful thinking that when I can finally have a few minutes to myself to read that I actually could stay awake and enjoy it.

Night time is one thing. During the day, however, this is what happens. Sunday afternoon, we have come back from church, had lunch and the kids all go off to do their thing. Here's my chance to have a few moments to spend with my book. So, I open it up and start to read. Guess what happens? I fall asleep! This has happened just about every time I try to read, regardless of the time of day or where I am. The most embarrassing time was when it happened in the car line! It's nice when all the other parents see you with drool coming out the side of your mouth and a magazine in your hands while you're sitting in your vehicle.

So, what to do? I don't really know. I'm sure if I told my doctor I would hear what I usually hear in which everything is attributed to getting older. I'm not sure I would be taken seriously, but I do think that this is a problem! I will resort to my research assistant, (ahem) Google, and let you know what I find.

Kids say the Darndest Things

(after her second day of school, in the car on the way home)

Princess: "Mom, I don't like my teachers, they are really mean!"

Me: "What do you mean, that your teachers are mean?"

Princess: "They won't let me do whatever I want."

Me: "Oh, I see."

Princess: "And, Mom? They won't let me pick my nose."

(oh, the NERVE of those teachers!)

“Dear children!
Also today I call you to personal conversion.
You be those who will convert and, with your life, will witness, love, forgive and bring the joy of the Risen One into this world,
where my Son died and where people do not feel a need to seek Him and to discover Him in their lives.
You adore Him, and may your hope be hope to those hearts who do not have Jesus.
Thank you for having responded to my call.”

Mindless Monday Question

Today's question:

Why is it that as soon as I pick up the phone, all my kids suddenly need my attention, and it can't wait, they need me RIGHT NOW!

Belle and Boo

Today, I discovered this Etsy shop and ordered the most delightful print:

Isn't this just precious? I couldn't resist this because it reminds me of my little princess who just can never pass up a carousel without a ride. Also, the story of Ava, the little princess who inspired Mandy to create these limited prints, reminded me of my princess and made me realize that I need to cherish every moment. Because you just never know when it will be the last.

Hmm, Oprah, really?

Now, I really wouldn't mind being compared to Yasmine Bleeth, or Lynda Carter, but do I really look that much like Oprah? I have to question the validity of that Celebrity look a like result!

Mindless Monday Question

When I am driving in a parking garage, why do I always duck? Does that somehow help the roof of the car clear the ceiling of the garage?

This is what it looks like when

Yearbook Time Travel

Here is something different. Try Yearbooking yourself, it is fun and easy! Not to mention completely hysterical. I almost spit my coffee out this morning doing these pictures.

In the 1960 photo, I think I actually look a little like my mom (she had cat eye glasses!)

It is amazing how much a hairstyle can make you look like a completely different person. Wow.
